In this Spotlight, we talk to Associate Director of Project Management, Charlie Wright, about her career, current role and exciting changes at Upperton.
Tell us about your career background.
My career in project management began at BCM in Nottingham where I joined as a Project Coordinator. I progressed to a Project Manager and spent the next 7 years gaining experience within project management and across the contract manufacturing sector. I moved to Upperton in 2021 as a Senior Project Manager, and managed a team of project managers and coordinators, becoming fully immersed within the pharmaceutical industry.
What is your current role?
I’m an Associate Director, Project Management so I manage a team of project managers and project coordinators where we are the customer-facing role within the company.
What is your career journey with Upperton?
I joined Upperton in 2021 as a Senior Project Manager. Initially, I was the only project manager in the business, so I really enjoyed mapping out the role and the project management process as well as getting to know the business and the projects. I was promoted to Associate Director, Project Management in 2023 and the team has really grown since the start of my career at Upperton which is great to see!
What does your team get involved in?
My team is involved from the beginning of a project which can be from early R&D stages or once a formulation has been developed and needs to be transferred into GMP. We oversee all activities internally as well as externally and with the client from a timing, cost and stakeholder management perspective to ensure that key milestones are met.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I love interacting internally with the cross-functional team and with our clients. It’s really interesting to understand each client’s clinical journey and the different scenarios that we work with.
Which projects do you like working on?
I like a good variety of projects as it helps to increase knowledge and awareness of different scenarios and different formulation development techniques! The team can expect to manage Research & Development only projects, R&D through to GMP clinical manufacture projects, tech transfer projects, repeat clinical campaigns and everything in between.
Can you describe Upperton in a few words?
Driven, passionate, and customer-focused.
