Business Development Spotlight with Christopher Bjerkan Wade

Can you describe your educational and career background?

After completing my education in BSc (Hons) in Biology from Western University, I began my career in research and consulting roles across Switzerland and Canada, working with organisations like Cisco and Nestlé. These early positions gave me exposure to digital transformation, laboratory management, and client engagement.

In 2019, I joined Thermo Fisher Scientific, where I progressed through several commercial roles, from Quotes Analyst to Senior Commercial Analyst, then Business Manager, gaining expertise in contract negotiation, client relationship management, and cross-functional leadership.

My last role at Thermo as a Business Development Executive, enabled me to partner with pharmaceutical companies across Europe to support oral solid dose development and commercialisation.

Can you give an overview of your role at Upperton?

As Senior Business Development Director at Upperton, I’m part of a dynamic and ambitious commercial team focused on expanding our presence across Europe. My role allows me to leverage my network and industry knowledge to drive business growth and build strong client relationships.

I particularly enjoy engaging with C-suite stakeholders and working closely with biotech ecosystems and innovation hubs. Drawing on my experience from other CDMOs, I look forward to influencing the growth of the business development team through initiatives and learnings from previous roles. Ultimately, I help position Upperton as a trusted partner for complex formulation and manufacturing challenges, ensuring we deliver both confidence and agility to our clients. 

What do you enjoy the most about working across European markets?

What I enjoy most is what I call ‘diversity within unity.’ Europe operates as a single market, but each country brings its own scientific culture, business norms, and therapeutic priorities, so no two conversations are ever the same. For example, a Swiss biotech might emphasise precision technologies, while a Nordic innovator could lead with sustainability and digital transparency.

I also appreciate how Europe combines world-class science, advanced manufacturing ecosystems, and highly collaborative networks. Cross-border projects are common, and navigating those complexities is both challenging and rewarding. It’s a great opportunity for a CDMO to differentiate itself and deliver real value.

What do you enjoy most about Business Development?

What I enjoy most about business development is the direct connection to impact. Every conversation, proposal, and partnership ultimately helps bring new therapies to patients who truly need them. Unlike some of my previous roles, business development gives me visibility at the earliest, and often most uncertain, stages of a project. It’s incredibly rewarding to guide innovators through the complex journey of development, scale-up, and regulatory hurdles. Being part of that process, and helping turn ideas into real treatments, is what makes this work so meaningful.
