2024 has been an exciting year for Upperton. Here’s an overview of what we've achieved:
Our facilities
Our Trent Gateway Facility
Our 50,000 sq ft GMP development and manufacturing facility is up and running! Our facility includes ten GMP suites, quality control labs, and formulation development capabilities, allowing us to support clinical trials from Phase 1 through Phase 3 and offer a seamless transition from R&D to GMP manufacturing.
Official Trent Gateway Opening
March marked the grand opening of our Trent Gateway facility. We were honoured to have Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, (co-inventor of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine), join us for the plaque unveiling.
MHRA Approval. In July, our Trent Gateway facility received MHRA inspection approval. This inspection marks a key milestone, allowing us to offer large-scale manufacturing capabilities for oral, nasal, and pulmonary drug products.
Sterile Manufacturing Expansion
We’ve invested £5 million into expanding our capabilities with a sterile drug manufacturing facility at Trent Gateway. Designed to meet the latest EU GMP Annex-1 standards, our 7,000 sq ft facility will support the production of small-volume sterile drug products for biologics and small molecules. Construction begins in February 2024, with operations expected to commence in Q4 2024.

Celebrating 25 Years in Business
Our Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Richard Johnson, reflected on Upperton’s 25-year journey: “Whilst our company continues to grow at phenomenal speed, the virtues that Upperton was founded on, doing good science and putting the needs of our customers first, remain at the top of our agenda twenty-five years later.”

STEM Careers Fair at Nottingham Trent University
Our careers fair in November 2024 allowed us to connect with new talent and discuss our latest opportunities.
Festival of Science and Curiosity
Our team helped children explore fingerprinting, DNA analysis, and more – encouraging them to think about future careers in science.

Medilink UK Awards
Upperton won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Medilink UK National Healthcare Business Awards.
Pharma Industry Awards
We were proud to be recognised with Pharma Project of the Year for our Trent Gateway facility build and Pharma Company of the Year. These awards recognised the exceptional speed and quality of the facility’s build, commissioning, and validation, completed in just 10 months.
The Sunday Times 100
We’re thrilled to be ranked #73 in The Sunday Times 100 list of the UK’s fastest-growing companies in 2024.
